Is there anything better than well-seasoned steak or chicken fajitas on a summer day, topped with shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, avocado, and a squeeze of lime? This is one my favorite homemade mixes. I think it tastes better than store-bought, and my family agrees. Even better, I love that I can control the ingredients, and that it saves me money.

Homemade Fajita Seasoning Mix

  • 4 T chili powder
  • 4 T cumin
  • 4 T dried cilantro
  • 3 T garlic powder
  • 4 t paprika
  • 4 t oregano
  • 4 t salt
  • 1 t ground black pepper or alligator pepper (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a pint-sized mason jar and shake well to combine. Use 2 T of mix for each pound of meat. I like to sear the chicken or steak first, then toss in the peppers and onions and sauté for a few minutes before adding the seasoning with a splash of lime juice. If you’re meat-free, try sautéing cooked or canned chickpeas with this seasoning.

They say the old ways are the best ways, and I have found this to be true. Reducing the ways our lives have been overcomplicated has really brought a sense of simplicity to our home and our family. I’m a wife and mother, and for the last 10 years, I’ve been finding ways for my family to simplify our lives, our health, our food, and most importantly, to create time and space for us to focus on things that are most important to us. Welcome to Call Me Old Fashioned – a blog where I share some of the things I’ve learned about getting back to our heritage of living simply.
